OUTKAST Aquemini

About three songs in, after the baleful Return of the G flips into the rousing Rosa Parks you realize Aquemini is the best rap record in years, a late-decade answer to Tribe Called Quest's Low End Theory that's as rich, raw, musical and unpretentiously visionary as anything from NYC. Atlantans Andre and Big Boi toss expertly ignorant bragging against art school musing, live funk jams against sci-r gizmos, and tree shaking 808 under everything. Outkast understand the power of sound the way Sly understood it on Their's a Riot Goin' On and P-Funk on The Motor Booty Affair. Like grooves and peach cobbler for the ears.
