Now out in the U.S. is part one of the best of Bristol’s important drum & bass label, V Recordings, which was formed to launch the jazzy sounds of Roni Size and his collaborators like DJ Krust.
V Recordings was founded in 1992 by DJ’s Bryan Gee and Jumping Jack Frost, and is right in there with Reinforced and Moving Shadow in the history of the young breakbeat style. Vol. 1’s sequence of old and new tracks is introduced by Size’s suitably titled "It’s Jazzy," a bottom-heavy club- flavoured version of his Reprazent sound. Size’s earlier collaboration with DJ Die, "It’s A Jazz Thing," was an important dreamy step away from the ruffer ragga direction of the time.
And among the four Size tunes included is Goldie’s old remix of Roni’s classic track "The Calling," which adds G’s ?heterodyne? style of hybrid synth sounds to the original’s rolling snares. Around these big tunes you’ll find new ones like Krust’s jazzy roller "Blaze Dis One" and Lemon D’s hard remix of the mellow "Change." With more great tracks from Ray Keith, Dillinjah and Die & Suv, V Classic Vol. 1 is an essential collection.
