Let’s be honest, last year’s Get Behind Me Satan was basically Jack White screaming “I’m bored” for 13 tracks straight. This year, having exorcised the vaudeville demon from his system, Jack leaves Meg behind to rock with the Raconteurs, a ridiculously talented quartet that includes himself, solo artist Brendan Benson and two members of the Greenhornes. Considering Benson’s own penchant for ’70s sounds, the Greenhornes’ obsession with copycatting the Stooges and Jack White’s boner for vintage equipment, you’d think the Raconteurs would emerge as a retro act. But you’d only be half right.?While the record may jump between ’60s harmonies, ’70s guitar extravaganzas and ’80s hair ballad verses during the course of one song, it never goes overboard, which is so very mid – ’00s.
