While wandering through the woods making creations which ranged from hardcore dancefloor fillers like Digeridoo to bizarre techno cover versions of Jean Michel Jarre’s Popcorn, Richard D James, the Aphex Twin, took a massive musical swing for his debut album. Selected Ambient Works 85-92 was a huge step away from his previous offerings in that the high pitched squeals and beats per minutes were replaced by lush, magical sounding electronic ballads. It was like a psychedelic trip for the acid generation. Coming over like a warmer classical sounding version of Kraftwerk or a Brian Eno album for consumption after a night out. Nine years on it is still one of the dreamiest records, the perfect nocturnal listen.
