Taiwanese / California export Joanna Wang has thrown a curveball with her latest release. Album one of the two-disc set has everything you’d expect from this jazzy acoustic-based singer/songwriter.
The real treat, however, lies with the second disc. Under the name New Tokyo Terror featuring “Chicken Joanna”, Wang gets playful with her music and honest with her lyrics.
Adorned with Louis Wain cat pictures, the album even looks a treat. Opening with the unusually titled “Adult Crop”, this solid collection offers coming of age musings set to jazzy honky-tonk country and acoustic stylings with the odd prog-rock keyboard solo thrown in.
The standout track ‘Nobody’s A Nun’ sounds like The Eels and could see Wang leading the way as one of the most innovative Asian singer/songwriters on the scene.
