VARIOUS ARTISTS - GU 10

The famed Global Underground imprint celebrates its tenth anniversary by delivering a commemorative three-disc set. A massive dose of sturdy - if sometimes uninspiring - progressive hits, GU 10 combines truly fabulous mixes (Polaroid's "So Damn Beautiful" (Amethyst Mix) comes to mind) with truly dreadful ones. With 64 total tracks, the set certainly provides beats for the bucks, but it casts too wide a net: Chable & Bonicci's "Ride" is a particularly joyful electro-pop diversion, but it clashes with its trance-track neighbours. PKA's "Temperature Rising," meanwhile, seems a lost and wandering mid-'90s Eurodance refugee. Variety may be the point, fine, but greater consistency in sound - if not era - would be welcome. The set succeeds in nostalgia, with average marks for overall quality.
