ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN What Are You Going to Do With Your Life?

The elements of Echo & the Bunnymen work best as Echo & the Bunnymen. That much certainly seems clear, now that frontman Ian McCulloch has tried his hand at solo albums and guitarist Will Sergeant has dabbled within some other musical settings. Their sound, though a little less edgy than in the early days, remains enticing, and McCulloch's voice has lost none of its dry majesty.

The songs are a mixed bag. Although nothing here is as dazzlingly inventive as, say, "Never Stop," or as gloriously sparkling as "Bring on the Dancing Horses," several tracks work very well. "Rust," the first single, is a beautiful, simply defined ballad, while "Get in the Car," the thoughtful "Baby Rain," and the title track also should prove attractive to longtime fans. Unless the peppy, seductive "Lost on You" gets a push from certain key outlets, it's unlikely that the attractive but not really immediate music of the Bunnymen will get enough attention. Which is too bad. This disc may not be groundbreaking, but it does mark a solid return to form from a band that still has something worthwhile to offer.
