St. LUNATICS Free City

St. Louis sucks. The cops are everywhere, policing one of the largest drug infested ghettos in America in full metal jackets. Like a Midwestern Outkast with just a touch of that Cash Money New Orleans sound, the crew raps some serious poems about navigating their messed up hometown. The beats are all funky butt and clickin', delivery is on, especially on the single Batter Up appropriating the Jefferson's theme for the chorus and featuring all the rhymers from their hood. Slick move because comin' up first in your town, can make you a target, and you get the feeling that this crew knows that, so they're comin' for real. They all wear Rams' jerseys, how MW is that?

Thursday, 20 November 2008 | B. Manley

Though the downbeat electronica and laconic vocals of Cardiff-born Jem Griffiths find her lumbered with a "Dido-wannabe" tag, she's actually much more adventurous than that. On the whole, Finally Woken wounds like someone finally told Beth Orton...
