Multi-talented Dick Lee is a true Singapore Icon. In the span of his career, he has won numerous awards and accolades in Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore.

Dick Lee

T
his musician extraordinaire is a household name and most locals will remember him as one of the Singapore Idol judges. The Dick Lee phenomenon started in 1971. At the age of fifteen, Dick participated in various talent contests with his siblings and also with the group, Harmony. His first album Life Story, featuring his own compositions was later released in 1974. However, the album that shot him to regional prominence was his 1989 release The Mad Chinaman. That album gave Dick his big break.

Dick is also passionate about musicals. He has written and composed many staged musicals including Beauty World, Fried Rice Paradise, Hot Pants and Jacky Cheung's acclaimed Snow Wolf Lake. He has to date, written countless songs for the top singing talents in Asia such as Sandy Lam, Kit Chan and Stephanie Sun. Dick is also the associate artistic director of the Singapore Repertory Theatre, an appointment he has held since 1998.

Apart from music, Dick's other passion is for fashion. His interest began when he started helping his mother design for her boutique "Midteen". Dick later studied fashion design at the Harrow School of Art in London. After which, he designed his own clothing labels for his boutique "Ping Pong", as well as for "Hemispheres", the first young designer store he set up with a business partner.

Other forays in the fashion world include being the display director for Tangs departmental store and the fashion editor of Female magazine. Dick also ran his own event company "Runway Productions", which specialised in producing fashion shows and tourism events. He is currently the creative consultant for Gamut, which is a subsidiary company of Tangs. Dick travels to Kula Lumpur twice a month to the design offices based there to work on the "Island Shop" and "Tangs Studio" collections.

Dick just released a DVD of his 30th anniversary concert. It comprises of over 3 hours of material featuring the comedy songs segment and an extensive repertoire that includes guest performances by Tanya Chua, Jacintha Abishenagaden, Hossan Leong, Kumar, Koh Chieng Mun and many others. The LIFE.STORIES: The 30th anniversary Concert DVD is available from all good record stores.

A 32 track two disc set for those who were able to traverse the divergent styles of their early experimental successes and 90's stadium filler that the early Mindsheads were easy to dismiss. It's telling that the brilliant house version of Theme...

Thursday, 20 November 2008 | Keith Kirchner

After the hype, here's Gay Dad's straight-laced songs. The wonderfully manufactured debate in the popular music press re: Gay Dad  means that many more people hold an (often passionate) opinion about them than their music would seem to merit....
