DMX The Great Depression

On the new single Who We Be, DMX rattles off his issues with the relentlessness of a pneumatic drill, “The bullshit, the drama, the guns, and the armor. The projects, the drugs, the kids, the hugs.” His anger is focused, and the track’s no-nonsense production, laced with a minimalist beat, and without obvious samples by newcomer Black Key, makes it compelling. D barks his complaints with the right blend of paranoia and passion. Four albums deep, this shtick can be tiresome, yet it’s a testament to DMX’s power that he can downshift from rage to rapture and keep mustering up just as much anguish.
