The tall blonde 19 year old Taylor Swift has practically become a single-handed saviour for the music industry as of late. Her debut sold three million copies and here’s the kicker: she wrote the songs herself and plays guitar, somewhat of a rarity in these manufactured times. Based on her sophomore release FearlessHer songs consist of country infused pop that’s filled with hooks and personable at the same time. One can imagine a 15 year old intensely relating to Swift’s lovelorn vocals on "Fifteen", because she sings them with a personality that’s as wide as a desert sunset. And whoa Nelly to her crush on Stephen, who is the subject of "Hey Stephen": "All of those other girls, well, they’re beautiful, but would they write a song for you?" Probably not, which is why Stephen’s losing out big time. They're great simple songs and Swift seems like she could construct dozens of these with ease. Over the course of an album though, her weedy choruses and constant banjo picking become a bit samey, as do Swift’s odes to teen life. But teens and then some are understandably eating them up. And when Swift hits her twenties and faces some real heartbreak, she’s got the goods to make some true classics. |
