My all-time favorite! Sure, it's retro, but June Christy has a deep, sexy voice and a casual, seemingly effortless delivery. While the album cover art features a smiling June with a big tall frosty glass of some undoubtedly now-extinct cocktail, the standard, "Something Cool," is actually a weird, sad ballad that could be Blanche DuBois' theme song, and June's swirling, breathy version really evokes the aging, needy coquette of the song. Other highlights include the upbeat, silly "Whee, Baby," which is almost annoyingly catchy, with lyrics by Peggy Lee (who knew?) and one of the sultriest, smokiest renditions of "Midnight Sun" that Thinky's ever heard. The whole CD (which includes a large collection of additional tracks in addition to those from the original album) is sublime. THE must have CD for rainy days!
