LISA GERRARD & PIETER BOURKE 'Duality'

The second solo release from Dead Can Dance frontwoman Lisa Gerrard in collaboration with multi-instrumentalist Bourke, is more like DCD than her last rather minimal effort, The Mirror Pool. Bourke, who's group Soma combines elements from Indian music, ambient sountracks, Ennio Morricone, as well as electronica, creates lush rhythmic landscapes that melt around the oriental melodies conjured through Miss Gerrard. The light airy dance of voice and strings in 'The Comforter' almost slips into silence, and would almost seems to fall completely into the backround if it didn't alter the entire of the atmosphere of the room in conformity with it's opiateing caress.

The Human Game is the closest to her recent DCD work. Her sweeping nasal howl rises and falls out of the intro, and into her most comprehendable lyrics in years. Her voice is truly that of an angel. That she has chosen to display her gifts in such progressive musical environments we should be thankful. Any opportunity to be near this talent should be taken, even if I don't believe the chemistry DCD had can be topped. Recommended for Natasha Atlas fans.
