BRYAN FERRY Frantic

Retaining his ability to knock out a tune with a voice that never seems to have aged in 20 years, Ferry makes a respectable effort in light of some recent solo joints from 50 year olds (Jagger comes to mind). Produced by the usually solid knob twirling of Rhett Davies, Frantic has a lush and live feel about it. Love songs, with a little melancholy is what you expect and what you get. Cruel, Nobody loves me and the Dylan cover Don't Think Twice It's All Right stand out, as well as the O Brother Where Art Thou inspired Goodnight Irene. The second half of the record features tracks with Brian Eno, Dave Stewart, and Kelli Dayton of Sneaker Pimps and takes the folkie stuff into much darker territory. Would do well to be stuck in an out of the way bar with a half dozen bottles of red wine, a friend and a red rose.
