THE EGG Travelator

Getting their break from with the talent hounds from Cup of Tea records, the Egg have fulfilled their promise on 1996's Albumen and on this re-release of last years effort. Live dance music, especially funk is tricky stuff when loose beats apply, but by an large this record succeeds as a listening experience rather than as a dance record. The audiences at their shows can range from techno-hippies to retro rockers and trancer dancers, but at times will have all scratching their collective heads.

Every time that huge space jam in the middle record ends and you've had it, the vocoder soaked "Getting Away With It" combines the humor and groove of George Clinton's "Atomic Dog" with the hypnotic ambience of Underworld. A mountainous rubble of acid squelches, bleeping arpeggios and those trademark loose limbed beats, good for those who want to get modern but resent the world of programmed beat and samples.
