The backbone of King Kooba are the duo of Charlie Tate (bassist for Neneh Cherry) and a dude called DJ Shuff. With five EP's under their belt and debut album ('The Imperial Solution') having been released in April1998, the group are revealing a rare trait these days, prolificism. Indeed there are a full 70 minutes spent on 14 journeys that hold their own on the dance floor whilst still being musical and retaining a sense of melody that enables the songs to work beyond clubland. Their songs have been constructed with a mixture of programming and live instruments, and are primarily of a jungly flavor, but there is plenty of improv and jazz, James Hardway style, throne in for measure. More orchestral and less frenetic than the latter, the ideas here are solid, even if a few similar sounding tracks could have been tossed to make it tighter.
