SFT 'Oh Venus'

Simon Fisher Turner has been at the forefront of soundtrack composition for more than a decade. A sampling maniac, his work on Derek Jarman's films including the riveting Last of England gave resonance to his name. As SFT, the composer tries to use his multitude of skills to make songs, lyrics and all, and the results are not exactly pop but certainly bound to hold the musically inclined rapt. Names like Coil, Japan and other 80's greats come to mind but none of those wave groups had the musicality of SFT. The middle of the record that is more song oriented works best, degenerating into more noisy textures at the end, but maintaining the visual elements of a soundtrack, like a reverse engineered movie in your head. There are no drummers involved and only a brief bit of bass on one track, lots of found sounds, and samples of the army of musicians SFT knows. The making of it was described like buying a large block of blue veined cheese, and cutting all the blue out, finely, and carefully. 'Oh Venus' is the small blue ball.
