COMPAY SEGUNDO Duets

Last year Buena Vista Social Club veteran Compay Segundo was in hospital in Havana suffering from exhaustion, and at the age of 94, the chance of him releasing another album seemed slim. Happily he has and he's roped in a few friends. A different guest duets on each track, making for an highly eclectic album. The new recordings with Khaled, Lou Bega and the actor Antonio Banderas find Segundo's baritone less firm that it once was, though still full of character. The new material is supplemented by several tracks of older vintage, among which the standouts include the delightful bolero La Pluma, with Omara Portuondo from 1998, and a pre-Buena Vista version of that album's magical opening track, Chan Chan, with Eliades Ochoa.

Amazing they put a photo of their ancient asses in the sleeve. Often failing where Steely Dan succeeds and triunphing where Genesis and Phil Collins fail, the 10 members of Supertramp manage to scape by with an admittedly horrible musical...
