T-PAIN Rappa Ternt Sanga

A first glance and you might easily dismiss him as another hardcore gangsta rapper. Truth be told, I almost did too. But hey, I'm sure glad I popped in his debut CD for a listen, so I could share this experience with you. Born Faheem Najm in Tallehassee (tagged as the Dirty South), Florida, this 20 year old is sure looking to prove his mettle as a singer/songwriter/rapper/producer.

I would have thought his music would be heavy and loud R&B rap with some coarse language perhaps, especially since I was cautioned with the Parental Advisory tag for explicit lyrics. Not only did it not give me a headache, I was actually quite enjoying the funky grooves, mid tempo beats and his smooth rap harmonies on tracks like his first single I'm Sprung and I'm N Luv (Wit A Stripper).

You can picture such music being played in funky bars on Friday nights or while cruising along the expressways at night. T-Pain was quite the child protege - turning his bedroom into a sonic foundry at age 10, equipped with his keyboard, beat machine and four-track recorder and not wanting to follow the formulaic R&B that's been done to death, he coined it to be Hard & B and there you have it, let's see how it works out...
