Finally! The Walkmen have found a winning formula that defines them. That key element is frontman Hamilton Leithauser's brash, high voice - easily the band's trademark. It's no surprise that Hundred Miles doesn't stray too far from their previous efforts - the fast, two - guitar jams still rock, and still have a lo - fi feel to them. A wise choice was made to cut "filler" tendencies of the past - where deliberate slow songs were spliced in between adrenaline ones. Subtle differences bubble up on a few of the better cuts - opener "Louisiana" almost has a reggae feel to it, complete with guitar skanks and horns. And it works. Closer "Another One Goes By" channels a Dick Dale surfer vibe, ultimately hinting that the Walkmen may have some fun tricks up their sleeves.
